27 March 2011, Tel Aviv, State of Israel – Headed by Philippine Ambassador to Israel (Ms.) Petronila P. Garcia, the Philippine Embassy turned over at least thirty (30) books donated by the Adarna Publishing House Incorporated in Manila to the Migrant Workers' library in Tel Aviv.
Mr. Hadas Ophrat, Chairman of Arteam, received the books from the Ambassador and expressed appreciation for the kind gesture and support of the Philippines to this project. Arteam said that the Philippine Embassy is the first Embassy to donate books in the library.
Arteam is a non-profit organization composed of Israeli artists that spearheaded the establishment of the library near Tachana Mercazit (Central Bus Station).
It collects books and reading materials from different countries through donations from government agencies and private companies.
This new donation is composed mainly of children's books (folklores) written in Filipino, including Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo and Bantayog: Rediscovering Manila's Monument which is a publication of the Foreign Service Institute. It will be recalled that National Commission for Culture and the Arts previously donated some books for the library.
The library is open to the public, particularly to the migrant workers in Israel. Its purpose is to encourage migrant workers and their children to read, discover other cultures and learn more about their own cultural heritage.
Ambassador Garcia stated that this endeavor is part of the Philippine Embassy's plans and programs for the year 2011 to promote Philippine culture not only to Israelis but also to children of migrant workers who may have little or no knowledge at all about their cultural heritage and roots.
